HARRISBURG, PA. - (Dec. 13, 2007) In response to a request from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for more information regarding the Commonwealth's application seeking permission to toll Interstate 80 (click here to view documents), Pennsylvania Turnpike Chief Executive Joe Brimmeier issued the following statement:
"We are pleased that FHWA has sent us this request for additional information. A project of this magnitude naturally is going to entail a considerable amount of information sharing among the agencies involved. In fact, we fully expected there would be an ongoing dialogue between the FHWA, PennDOT and the Turnpike Commission throughout this process. We knew before we even got started that this is a lengthy process, and we are continuing to cooperate with the FHWA to provide all the data they need to make an informed decision."
Brimmeier noted that the Turnpike's team has already begun the process of gathering much of the information that has been requested. A traffic-and-revenue study and a separate engineering survey of Interstate 80 are ongoing. In addition, Brimmeier noted that the Turnpike has already held nine public meetings on the proposed tolling of I-80 and has met with the most-impacted Planning Organizations across the I-80 corridor.
The Turnpike has already provided $292.2 million in payments to PennDOT to help fund repairs and maintenance of bridges, roads and mass-transit agencies across the state.
