Project Area

The Northeastern Extension Total Reconstruction and Widening Project, Mid-County Interchange to Lansdale Interchange is located in Montgomery County. This 10.5-mile project corridor traverses five townships, namely:

Plymouth Township dates back to 1686. Throughout its long history, the township has been in the forefront of business and industry, building a network of transportation routes that aided in the establishment of limekilns and quarries. Specialty and community shopping centers are located throughout. The nearest major shopping centers are the Plymouth Meeting Mall and the Metroplex Shopping Center, both located in the heart of the township.

Whitpain Township is one of the oldest in Montgomery County. Founded in 1701, today it is a vibrant community which has been rated by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the best places in the Philadelphia suburbs to live. The township is a successful mix of residential, commercial and rural development with an emphasis on livable neighborhoods, passive and active recreation opportunities, respect for diversity and commitment to community.

Worcester Township, established in 1733, is the most centrally located township in Montgomery County. Grist and sawmills were the first industries. Many historic buildings have been preserved to give tribute to the township’s rich history. Today, it is experiencing modest residential growth while maintaining viable farming and open spaces. Villages include Cedars, Center Point and Fairview Village.

Upper Gwynedd Township depicts a unique combination of history and progression. Upper Gwynedd encompasses 8.05 square miles with a population of 14,243. It is a prime area because it is close enough to the city for commuting yet far enough to experience country living. Upper Gwynedd Township was created Dec. 16, 1891. An old Indian trail became a major transportation route called Sumneytown Pike; hotels, businesses and taverns soon centered around this “Great Road.”

Towamencin Township, founded in 1728, boasts beautiful residential neighborhoods, historic farmhouses, first-class recreational facilities and wide-open spaces. The community is a successful mix of residential, commercial and rural development and is home to many fine elementary and secondary educational institutions.
