This page is to inform the public with timely and accurate construction information to improve travel when using the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Keeping the public informed of construction activities will enable safe and expeditious travel through the construction zones.
The reconstruction of the Turnpike from MP 85 to MP 94 is now substantially complete with minor punchlist and clean-up remaining. Originally scheduled for completion in December 2005, the project achieved substantial completion in November of 2004, over one year earlier than planned.
The total reconstruction of the Turnpike is one of the Commission’s most important long term initiatives representing an investment of more than $1 billion over the next decade. Three sections of the Turnpike totaling over 24 miles have already been rebuilt. Two current projects that total more than 20 miles of new roadway (including the milepost 85 – 94 project) have been recently completed. In addition, several other reconstruction projects are currently on the drawing board or are scheduled for construction in the near future. The total reconstruction of the Turnpike, begun in 1999, signifies the first time that the toll road – know as “America’s First Superhighway” has been replaced from the ground up since it initially opened in October 1940.
